Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA)

The Ashulia industrial belt has more than 300 garment factories that together account for nearly 20 percent of overall apparel exports from Bangladesh.

 On May 13, BGMEA had decided to indefinitely close all garment units in Ashulia industrial belt after a series of labour unrest incidents, but the decision was later changed to only those apparel units that are facing labour unrest

The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) executives committee along with factory owners, industrial police, local leaders & local Member of Parliament Talukdar Towhid Jung Murad Dhaka 19 Savar/ Ashulia held a meeting to resolve Ashulia zone RMG workers agitation . 
At present, 235 RMG garment factories have shut down in Ashulia industrial belt,” Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) President Atiqul Islam earlier mentioned at the meeting that ‘We asked the government & Local MP to provide security so that the workers cannot carry out vandalism’. Mr. Islam said the decision to shut clothing units in Ashulia was taken as per the Section 13(A) of the Labour Act, which means the workers would not get their salary during the closure.
At the meeting factory owners have discussed many issues with local Member of Parliament. Md. Atiqul Islam Honorable President BGMEA along with owner Sharmeen group also said that local MP Murad Jung has always been generous & always came forward to assist in any crisis moment. Last year a devastating fire at Tazreeen Fashions in November, 2012 on which Murad Jung MP and all his local leader have contributed with what ever they could. However at the end of the meeting  factory owners assured to Honorable MP that they would re-open the garment factories at Ashulia, which are at present closed on security ground only if Local MP Murad Jung assured the owners & BGMEA president & executives that Awami League Govt. as well as MP Murad Jung along with all his local leaders will be always standing by to provide any sort of co-operation or assistance required for operating Ashulia industrial belt smoothly.  President BGMEA also announced that due to security measure BGMEA will  launching RMG workers Database program for entire Ashulia zone RMG.
